Tyler Chapman

Masters Student

I am a Master of Arts (Psychology) student at Massey University and a mental health clinician with  experience supporting individuals and whānau of diverse ages, identities, and backgrounds. My research is oriented toward exploring the lived realities of rainbow young people in rural New Zealand, where cultural, environmental, and social conditions often differ from those in urban areas. I am interested in exploring how these unique rural contexts intersect with rainbow identities and what that might mean for the overall wellbeing of rainbow people — an area often overlooked in the literature.

I am also interested in eco- and transpersonal psychologies as they relate to the wellbeing of rainbow young people navigating complex rural identities and environments as well as how agriculture-based gender mythologies combine with broader cultural narratives to influence how rainbow people relate to themselves, others and the environment, in rural Aotearoa.

What brings me joy?

I find joy in nurturing meaningful connections with all beings, including myself, and in embracing a playful, curious, and reverent attitude toward life. I also enjoy 5 Rhythms dance, archery, vipassana meditation, reading bedtime stories to my dog and having morning cups of tea with mum.
